Beautiful bathrooms should feel calm, considered, and quietly safe — and that is exactly what we aim to deliver. Understanding slip ratings can feel technical at first, but with the right guidance, choosing the correct anti-slip floor tiles for bathroom spaces becomes refreshingly straightforward.
Anti-Slip Floor Tiles — When Are They Needed?
Particularly where water exposure is frequent or where additional reassurance is required.
These are often considered for:
· Walk-in showers
· Wet rooms
· Spa-inspired bathrooms
· Family bathrooms with higher footfall
What Do Slip Ratings Mean in Real Life?
Slip resistance is commonly measured using a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) - a British Standard BS 7976-2. In simple terms, this test assesses how a tile performs when walked on, particularly in wet conditions.
PTV 36+ is widely regarded as suitable for internal wet areas. This rating offers reassurance in bathrooms, ensuites, and shower rooms as it strikes a balance between safety and refined design.
A common misconception is that anti slip tiles must look overly textured or utilitarian. In reality, modern porcelain manufacturing allows for beautifully nuanced surfaces that still deliver excellent grip.
What about “R” slip ratings?
You may also see slip resistance expressed using R ratings (such as R10 A+B or R11), which are based on a ramp test rather than the pendulum test. While the two systems are different and not directly interchangeable, a PTV 36+ generally aligns with tiles that would fall within the R10 A+B to lower R11 range for internal wet areas.
Good to Know: Wall Tile Suitability
All tiles from Boutique Stone, whether matt or polished, are suitable for walls including shower enclosures, feature walls, and bathroom splash zones.
Slip ratings are only relevant for floor applications, allowing you to layer texture and finish creatively across floors and walls.
Our Approach to Bathroom Safety
Almost all of our matt effect porcelain tiles have been selected with a minimum PTV 36+ in mind, making them ideal for bathroom floors where safety when wet is essential.
